From the World Bank’s 2013 World Development Report:
“The share of the population of the developing world living on less than US$1.25 a day (in purchasing power parity) fell from 52 percent in 1981 to 22 percent in 2008, or from 1.94 billion people to 1.29 billion. This reduction is the result of multiple factors, but the creation of millions of new, more productive jobs, mostly in Asia but also in other parts of the developing world, has been the main driving force.” (Overview, page 7)
