In a new piece on The Atlantic Cities, urban scholar Richard Florida writes that “Community is clearly key to creating an atmosphere where risk-taking is, in essence, less risky,” noting that high levels of membership in communal organizations can as much as double the incidence of self-employment in a community.
Florida also notes that the utility of social capital can often lead to a lack of diversity in an entrepreneurial community, and indicates that newcomers and marginal community members can actually suffer from such insularity.
