Which city has more startups: Dallas, Texas or Prescott, Arizona? The answer depends on how you count.
A new Kauffman Foundation report creates a new way to compare metropolitan areas of different sizes by looking at the number of new companies founded per capita. Interestingly, when you use this methodology, some smaller cities — like Prescott and Bellingham, WA — have nearly twice as many new firms as major metropolitan areas like Dallas-Fort Worth and Minneapolis-St. Paul.
The report also identifies the cities that are creating more new companies than their peers. Among metropolitan areas with 250,000 to 500,000 residents, Daytona Beach in Florida is the top performer. Tucson, AZ has the greatest number of startups among cities with 501,000 to 1 million people, and the greater New York City area is the best performer among metropolitan areas with more than 1 million residents.
